WASHINGTON, DC – The State Department doubled down on its remarks that it encourages “fair, transparent and timely legal processes” on the arrest of Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal, a day after Acting Deputy Chief of Mission Gloria Berbena in New Delhi was summoned by the Indian government to communicate India’s “strong objections” to the earlier remarks.

State Department spokesperson Mathew Miller was asked about his response to India’s summoning over comments on CM Kejriwal’s arrest and freezing of the Congress party’s bank accounts.

“We continue to follow these actions closely, including the arrest of Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal. We are also aware of the Congress party’s allegations that tax authorities have frozen some of their bank accounts in a manner that will make it challenging to effectively campaign in the upcoming elections,” Miller added.

“And we encourage fair, transparent, and timely legal processes for each of these issues,” he stressed.

Kejriwal was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate for alleged money laundering in connection with the Delhi excise policy case. The Rouse Avenue Court of Delhi on March 28 extended the custodial remand of the Delhi Chief Minister by four more days till April 1.

” I’m not going to talk about any private diplomatic conversations, but of course, what we have said publicly is what I just said from here, that we encourage fair, transparent, timely legal processes. We don’t think anyone should object to that. We’ll make the same thing clear privately,” Miller added.

Stating that India is proud of its “robust and independent” democratic institutions, the Ministry of External Affairs called the remarks by the US State Department on the arrest of Kejriwal “unwarranted” and comments on the elections “completely unacceptable.”

  • I do not think USA should interfere in the internal justice system of India and the recent arrest of the chief-minister of Delhi. Just as USA does not want any interference from any foreign nation in its elections, the same should apply to USA not interfering other Nation’s elections. The statements by the US Ambassador and the US State Department spokesperson are unwarranted and question the fairness of the Indian Justice System which is unacceptable.

    • Election time!

Indian elections will be over when the US elections are in full swing. Revenge can be served real cold.

  • Investigate a US company and arrest them for illegal practices.

    1) Pick up all the prosecutions of US companies by US and Europe and start investigating them for fines. And place a few Americans in Jail and then negotiate one Billion like the Iranians for their release. Start with bad vaccines and drugs
    2) Go after defective Aotomobiles from Ford and GM
    3) Question the freezing of foreign accounts of individuals

And lastly fire the US Ambassador and tell him to come when the country wants to stop interfering and behave like they are in the Middle East

  • I get a sneaky feeling that US may have been involved at some degree in Kejriwal mess! Top 4 of the AAP party are sitting in jail and US comes out against BJP government. And there may be some more to follow from that party. In any company, if it’s top 4 are involved in corruption, that company would be closed.

And at the same time Pannun, CIA agent as reported, claims he gave $16M to Kejriwal. Has this newspaper failed to report it?

As per Congress, does not the Indian Tax agency have right to do what it’s law allows? If IRS in US do a similar thing, would anyone has right to complain?

We should do everything to wipe out corruption, even if US is involved.

  • Who gave the U.S. the authority to interfere in other nations’ affairs? India has a far better and more comprehensive Constitution than the flimsy U.S. Constitution. Indian governments, by and large, have a good record of following the Indian Constitution. They have amended it when necessary. When was the last time the U.S. Constitution was amended? In 1992 – Amendment XXVII. Why is it that the U.S. is unable to prosecute a dishonest liar like Donald Trump? It is because its Constitution is too weak and soft. Americans with a lot of money can hoodwink the American Constitution easily. Plutocrats, oligarchs, aging senators, and influential groups run the country for their benefit. Trump, after instigating the attack on the Capitol on January 6, 2020, is still free and pompously running for a second term as President, even proudly claiming the January 6 attack as a patriotic virtue.

  • Reports are coming out indicating Kejriwal and Pannun as CIA “assets”. We will find out the truth as things unravel over the next few months and the prosecution gathers more proof. Possibly similar to the situation in US where gangsters and criminals are charged with smaller crimes such as tax evasion, giving the government more time to assemble proof related to national security and higher crime concerns. USA didn’t say a word when the Chief Minister of the state of Jharkhand was arrested recently by ED for financial corruption. Why is US taking an active role in “protecting” Kejriwal and Pannun? Also, USA didn’t do something similar (protest) when Imran Khan was jailed and his party banned from elections weeks before Pakistan elections. Should India complain to the US that President Biden’s chief opponent is being prosecuted by Biden’s Department of Justice on several cases in an election year?

  • IT IS NONE OF THE US GOVERNMENT’S BUSINESS. STAY OUT OF INDIA’S INTERNAL AFFAIRS!!!

  • Here we go again! India has unleashed its undercover agents at home and abroad to spread lies and protect its current government’s shady unconstitutional practices to harass and intimidate opposition leaders and activists engaged in keeping the promise of democracy. No surprise that this political harassment started so close to the election time. Who are they trying to fool this time?
