BENGALURU -The United States has inaugurated its fifth consulate in India here. fThe ceremony was attended by US Ambassador to India Eric Garcetti, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, and Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar.
Garcetti described Bengaluru as India’s “Silicon Valley” and a vital center for collaboration in defense, technology, and aerospace. “This consulate fulfills a commitment made during Prime Minister Modi’s state visit to Washington in 2023 and reflects our shared vision of expanding ties between our two nations,” Garcetti said of the Biden administration.
Karnataka is home to nearly 700 US companies, with thousands of American citizens living, working, and studying in the state.
Although visa services will not be immediately available, plans are in place to introduce them in the future. Until then, consular services will continue to be handled by the Chennai consulate and other US diplomatic posts in India.
