Vicky Kaushal On Mental Challenges And Katrina’s Support
MUMBAI, (ANI)- Actor Vicky Kaushal is gearing up for the release of his much-anticipated film Chhaava, where he portrays the legendary Maratha ruler, Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj.
Known for his dedication to every character, Kaushal admits this role was his “toughest” yet, requiring intense physical and mental preparation.
“Playing such a historical figure requires a lot of discipline, and discipline is tough. If you are not used to it, it becomes very challenging because it’s not just a one-month commitment; it’s a commitment for one and a half to two years,” he said in a recent interview with ANI.
Kaushal gained around 25 kg and underwent rigorous horse riding and sword fighting training to ensure authenticity. Beyond the physical transformation, he immersed himself in the era’s culture, history, and language, working closely with director Laxman Utekar.
“Instead of just reading books, I decided to sit with Laxman sir every day. He would feed me information, not just from the novel, but from the entire era, culture, and what life must have been like for these figures,” he shared.
Switching between the role and his real self was challenging. “You become silent, stay more focused, and that stays with you,” Kaushal said, acknowledging how intense roles can affect an actor’s mindset.
Despite the demanding process, he credited his wife, actress Katrina Kaif, for her support. “She knew I needed space while shooting for a role like Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj,” he revealed.
At a promotional event in Delhi, Kaushal joked that Kaif missed his bulked-up look once he lost weight and shaved his beard. “She would send me reels and ask, ‘Where is this Vicky?'” he said.
Looking ahead, Kaushal will undergo another transformation for Mahavatar, in which he plays Chiranjeevi Parashurama.
Directed by Laxman Utekar, Chhaava is set to release on February 14. The film also stars Akshaye Khanna and Rashmika Mandanna. It follows the life of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, son of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, starting with his coronation in 1681.
The film has faced controversy, with a dance sequence featuring Sambhaji Maharaj performing the traditional Maharashtrian Lezim dance being removed after objections from political figures, including Maharashtra Minister Uday Samant.
Despite the challenges, Kaushal is proud of his work. “I’m just happy to say this is the toughest role I’ve played to date. I hope to continue growing, not just as an actor but as a human being, with every role I take on.”
