LOS ANGELES, CA – The well-known exponent of Mohiniyattam, Vijayalakshmi, in collaboration with the South Asian Network (SAN), a non-profit organization serving the South Asian community in Southern California, is holding a series of workshop for women based on healing and empowerment.

Titled ‘Dance and Discussion,’ the series is one more stop in Vijayalakshmi’s vision to share the sacred dance throughout the US. The 3-month series of free events will be conducted in varying regions in Southern California and with a wide demographic of women who identify as survivors of abuse.

To kick off the workshops, Vijayalakshmi will be teaching Mohiniyattam – which emphasizes female empowerment through exploration and celebration of femininity – to an audience of older adult women, ages 50+ at the Cerritos Senior Center on April 29. Four other workshops in Torrance and the San Fernando Valley will follow.

The movement in dance, alongside the practice of maintaining one’s mental health, is a unique combination, said Vijayalakshmi, that will empower. The workshops are a celebration of all that is feminine, and the ancient dance form of Mohiniyattam, rooted in the feminine, can be transformative.

Vijayalakshmi, founder of The Mohiniyattam Institute, apart from being celebrated as a performer is also a writer and speaker and, identifies herself as a feminist. She has graced stages across the globe for over three decades, including the Bolshoi Theatre, the Edinburgh International Festival and the Lincoln Centre.

All women, regardless of ethnic background, are requested to sign up by contacting South Asian Network at (562) 403-0488 or email  tanya@southasiannetwork.org.
