Vinay Mohan Kwatra Named Ambassador To Washington

WASHINGTON, DC — Vinay Mohan Kwatra has been appointed as the new Ambassador of India to the United States, according to an announcement made by the Ministry of External Affairs in New Delhi.

Kwatra, who served as the 34th Foreign Secretary of India from May 2022 until July 14, 2024, is highly regarded for his extensive expertise in managing India’s relations with its neighboring countries, including China, as well as with the US and Europe.

A seasoned diplomat with over 32 years of experience, Kwatra has held several significant positions. Notably, he served as Joint Secretary in the Prime Minister’s Office from October 2015 to August 2017.

Born on December 15, 1962, Kwatra holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Agriculture and Animal Husbandry from GB Pant University of Agriculture and Technology and a Master of Science degree. He also earned a diploma in International Relations from the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies.

Kwatra’s diplomatic career includes a tenure as Minister (Commerce) at the Embassy of India in Washington DC from 2010 to 2013. He also led the Policy Planning & Research Division of the Ministry of External Affairs from July 2013 to October 2015, and subsequently headed the Americas Division, where he managed India’s relations with the United States and Canada.

Kwatra is married to Pooja Kwatra, and the couple has two sons.
