MORIGAON, (ANI)– Over half of Assam’s Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary, home to the country’s densest population of one-horned rhinoceroses, has been submerged due to floodwaters from the Brahmaputra and Kopili rivers, disrupting anti-poaching efforts and forcing wildlife to seek higher ground.

Forest officials confirmed that 10 of the sanctuary’s 17 anti-poaching camps are underwater, including.

Despite the inundation, the sanctuary’s 107 one-horned rhinos have largely relocated to the elevated areas that remain dry.

To manage the crisis, the forest department has intensified patrolling with guards deployed in both country and mechanized boats. Relocation efforts are also underway for elephants, with half already shifted to higher terrain.

Pobitora, although only 16 sq km in area, plays a crucial role in rhino conservation. The ongoing floods have raised concern among conservationists and officials over the vulnerability of its concentrated wildlife population.
