PLEASANTON, CA– Aneel Bhusri, co-founder and executive chair of Workday, has returned as chief executive officer following a leadership transition at the company.
Bhusri succeeds Carl Eschenbach, who is stepping down as CEO and as a member of the board after leading the company through a period of global expansion and operational scaling. Eschenbach will continue to support Workday as a strategic advisor. The transition is effective immediately as the company enters fiscal year 2027.
Workday said the leadership change comes as the company positions itself for the next phase of growth amid rapid developments in artificial intelligence.
Bhusri, who previously served as CEO before moving into the executive chair role, acknowledged Eschenbach’s contribution and pointed to the company’s next phase. “AI is a bigger transformation than SaaS, and it will define the next generation of market leaders,” Bhusri said, adding that he looks forward to working with company presidents Gerrit Kazmaier and Rob Enslin.
