FRESNO, CA– U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers arrested Aman Kumar, identified by the Department of Homeland Security as an illegal immigrant from India, in connection with a felony hit-and-run case involving a 4-year-old boy in Fresno, California.

According to local reporting cited by DHS, Kumar was driving a vehicle that struck the child on April 28, 2026. The boy was hospitalized in critical but stable condition and is expected to survive, according to the latest reports referenced by the agency.

The Fresno Sheriff’s Department arrested Kumar the following day and charged him with felony hit-and-run causing death or injury. DHS said Kumar was later released from local custody before ICE officers arrested him on May 13 outside the California Superior Court in Fresno County.

In a statement, Acting Assistant Secretary Lauren Bis criticized California sanctuary policies and said local officials released “this criminal illegal alien from jail back onto the streets.”

Bis said ICE officers later arrested Kumar outside a criminal court and urged California officials to cooperate with federal immigration detainers.

The agency also referenced a February letter sent by ICE Director Todd Lyons to California Attorney General Rob Bonta requesting the state honor ICE detainer requests involving undocumented immigrants accused or convicted of crimes.
