OHIO – An Indian national charged in a fatal Ohio crash that killed his pregnant teenage partner and her unborn child could face deportation after federal immigration authorities lodged a detainer against him.

Tarsem Singh, 33, has been indicted on multiple felony charges, including involuntary manslaughter, reckless homicide and aggravated vehicular homicide, in connection with the February 16 crash that claimed the lives of 17-year-old Ashlee Holmes and her unborn baby.

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement has placed a detainer on Singh, meaning he could remain in custody and face deportation proceedings after the criminal case is resolved.

According to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, Singh entered the United States illegally through the southern border in California in February 2017. He was arrested at the time but was later released on bond following a judge’s order.

The case has drawn renewed attention after Ashlee’s mother, Annette Holmes, publicly called for Singh to be removed from the country. “Nobody should ever deserve to die while pregnant with their first kid,” Holmes told Newsweek.

“I’m OK with him being kicked out of the country permanently. We came to find out he came here illegally at first. They can send him wherever he is best off because I don’t want him in the States no more,” she said.

According to Ashlee Holmes’ family, Singh was the father of her unborn child. Family members also told Newsweek that Holmes had attempted to end the relationship on multiple occasions.

Authorities said the crash occurred after Singh failed to stop for law enforcement officers and led deputies on a high-speed pursuit.

According to the Ohio State Highway Patrol crash report, the Range Rover Velar carrying Singh and Holmes was initially recorded traveling at 79 mph in a 55-mph zone. During the pursuit, the vehicle’s speed exceeded 120 mph before the driver lost control while negotiating a curve.

The SUV crossed into the opposite lane, struck a Jeep and rolled over multiple times.

Holmes was ejected from the vehicle and suffered fatal injuries. Her unborn child also died in the crash. Singh was injured and transported to a hospital for treatment.

Singh is being held on a $1 million bond. Under U.S. law, he is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court. His jury trial is scheduled for Aug. 17-21.
