Dr.Kedar S. Mate Appointed To Blue Shield Of California Board

OAKLAND, CA – Dr. Kedar S. Mate, a physician and healthcare quality leader, has been appointed to the Board of Directors of Blue Shield of California.
Mate is chief medical officer of Qualified Health AI, a digital health company focused on helping healthcare organizations use artificial intelligence safely and effectively. He previously served as president and CEO of the Institute for Healthcare Improvement, an international organization focused on healthcare quality and patient safety.
Mate has more than two decades of experience in healthcare quality, patient safety, innovation and health system transformation in the US and internationally. His work has included healthcare delivery, policy, technology and innovation, and he has advised organizations including the World Health Organization and the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services.
His board and advisory roles have included MLK Community Health System, Healthcare Excellence Canada and the Center for Care Innovations. He has also been involved with the National Academy of Medicine’s Artificial Intelligence Code of Conduct initiative.
Blue Shield of California Board Chair Pamela DeCoste said Mate’s background as a physician, healthcare executive and innovator would bring valuable experience to the board.
Mate said he was pleased to join the board and looked forward to supporting the nonprofit health plan’s efforts to provide access to quality healthcare that is sustainably affordable.
Mate is also a senior scholar at Stanford University’s Clinical Excellence Research Center. He practices internal medicine at New York-Presbyterian Hospital and serves on the faculty of Weill Cornell Medicine.
He earned his medical degree from Harvard Medical School and a bachelor’s degree in American history from Brown University.
Founded in San Francisco in 1939 and now headquartered in Oakland, Blue Shield of California is a nonprofit, independent health plan with nearly 6 million members and 6,800 employees. It provides health, dental, vision, Medicaid and Medicare plans in California.
