TRENTON, NJ – Balvir Singh, a public school educator for over 20 years and former Burlington County Commissioner, has been sworn in as a member of the New Jersey General Assembly, becoming the first Sikh lawmaker in the state’s history.
Singh, 40, took the oath of office surrounded by family on January 30. He will represent the 7th Legislative District in Burlington County. Assembly Speaker Craig J. Coughlin administered the oath.
Singh, a Democrat, emphasized his focus on education, economic opportunity, and equitable access to services. “I will remain committed to ensuring the voices of everyday people in Burlington County and across New Jersey are heard in Trenton,” Singh said.
Singh previously served on the Burlington Township Board of Education and as a Burlington County Commissioner, where he worked on affordable housing, economic development, and public health. His initiatives included rental assistance programs, zero-interest loans for businesses, and support for a county emergency shelter.
Singh immigrated to the United States from Punjab in 1999 at age 14. He attended Burlington City High School and earned degrees from The College of New Jersey and Rutgers University.
