Education Department Probes 45 B-Schools Over Race Policies

WASHINGTON, DC – The U.S. Department of Education is investigating 45 universities over their race-based eligibility programs, citing potential violations of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. The probe, announced on March 14, follows complaints that the schools collaborated with a program aimed at boosting diversity in business school admissions.

Since Donald Trump returned to the presidency in January, his administration has sought to restrict programs that offer race, gender , or ethnicity-based support. Trump and many conservatives argue that such diversity efforts unfairly disadvantage white Americans.

The Department of Education says these university initiatives may violate the 1964 Civil Rights law, which was designed to reduce discrimination against non-white Americans.

While the department did not specify who was allegedly harmed by the programs, U.S. Secretary of Education Linda McMahon emphasized in a statement, “Today’s announcement expands our efforts to ensure universities are not discriminating against their students based on race and race stereotypes.”
