Trump Slaps Another 25% Over Russia Oil; US Tariffs On India Now A Whopping 50%
WASHINGTON, DC – President Donald Trump on August 6 announced he has signed an executive order imposing an additional 25 per cent tariff on imports from India, citing the country’s continued purchase of Russian oil.
The new tariffs will be applied to all eligible Indian goods entering the US from 21 days after the order’s signing, except for shipments already in transit before the deadline and cleared before September 17.
The White House said the decision is aimed at strengthening measures taken under earlier sanctions against Russia following its actions in Ukraine. The US President had announced a 25 per cent tariff on India last week.
The order states that India is directly or indirectly importing oil from Russia, which the US considers a threat to its national security and foreign policy.
‘Accordingly, and as consistent with applicable law, articles of India imported into the customs territory of the United States shall be subject to an additional ad valorem rate of duty of 25 per cent,’ the order reads.
‘Subject to section 3 of this order, this rate of duty shall be effective with respect to goods entered for consumption, or withdrawn from warehouse for consumption, on or after 12.01 a.m. Eastern Daylight Time 21 days after the date of this order, except for goods that (1) were loaded onto a vessel at the port of loading and in transit on the final mode of transit prior to entry into the United States before 12.01 a.m. Eastern Daylight Time 21 days after the date of this order; and (2) are entered for consumption, or withdrawn from warehouse for consumption, before 12.01 a.m. Eastern Daylight Time on September 17,’ the order added.
These duties will be in addition to existing tariffs unless the goods fall under certain exemptions, including specific categories outlined in earlier trade executive orders.
Goods subject to this order must also follow strict customs rules, including being admitted into US foreign trade zones under ‘privileged foreign status’.
Trump has retained the authority to modify the order based on changing circumstances, retaliation from affected countries, or significant policy shifts by Russia or India.
The order also directs the US Commerce Department, State Department, Treasury, and other agencies to monitor other countries’ oil trade with Russia and recommend similar actions, if necessary. (IANS)

As an Indian American and a committed Democrat, I strongly oppose President Trump’s decision to impose a 50% tariff on Indian goods. In today’s world, trade deals and tariffs are being weaponized, marking the end of the era of free trade. This policy will hurt American consumers, particularly South Asian Americans, by driving up costs for essentials like medicines, groceries, and cultural goods vital to our community.
India supplies nearly half of America’s affordable generic drugs. These tariffs will inflate prescription prices, hitting families, seniors, and small businesses hard. Everyday items—spices, lentils, Diwali clothing—will become pricier, with reports estimating appraels , footwear costs could rise 37%. Indian American businesses face higher supply chain costs, threatening jobs. India’s likely retaliation on U.S. agriculture and steel will further harm American farmers, creating a lose-lose scenario.
Adding insult to injury, Trump granted China a 90-day tariff pause while targeting India, a key democratic ally, for its energy needs. This double standard risks undermining the robust $186 billion U.S.-India trade partnership and our shared goal of reaching $500 billion by 2030.
The United States and India share a strong, vibrant partnership built on mutual respect, economic ties, and shared values. We must work through these challenges together, not through divisive tariffs that hurt both nations. I urge both governments to prioritize dialogue and fair trade solutions that strengthen our alliance and keep costs affordable for our communities.
As a Democrat, I stand for policies that unite, not divide. Let’s reject weaponized tariffs and build a future where our partnership thrives for the benefit of all.

First of all, there has never been “free trade” or “fair trade” between any of the countries! Just about every country has screwed the USA financially, while the USA has screwed other countries militarily. India has never been “a key democratic ally” of the USA! It has taken sides with Russia ever since its independence. Democrats talk good but do bad with policies like “defund the police”, “open border”, “tax and spend”, “sanctuary cities”, “no bail for crooks”, and the list goes on. Just look at the once nice cities like San Francisco, Chicago, New York, Los Angeles, etc., now turned into Garbage Cities by “donkeys”. It is long overdue to get out of the Democrats and become an Independent voter. Yes, Trump is arrogant and talks badly, but few things he is doing good such as kicking out millions of illegals, who jumped the queue to get into this country under Biden, while others wait for many years to get in legally!

I 100 % agree with અનુપમ. BE independent voter and choose a deserved candidate and not the party.
