Mayor Mamdani Rejects Pay Hike Approved By City Council

NEW YORK, NY- New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has announced that he will not accept the salary increase included in a pay raise package recently approved by the New York City Council.

Mamdani explained that increasing the mayor’s salary is simply not a priority for New Yorkers. “I haven’t knocked on anyone’s door in New York City and they’ve said their concern is that the mayor makes too little,” Mamdani said.

Instead, Mamdani stated that he wants the allocated funds to benefit residents facing financial hardship, expressing his hope that the money goes “to the pockets of those who are struggling in the city.”

The legislation passed by the Council grants its members an 18% salary increase and includes a corresponding pay raise for the mayor’s office. Despite the measure covering his own position, Mamdani has made it clear he will refuse the extra compensation.

If signed into law, the bill will mark the first salary increase for New York City Council members since 2016.
