SAN FRANCISCO, CA – Uday Ruddaraju, an engineer whose career has spanned Amazon Web Services, eBay, Robinhood and xAI, has been named Chief Technology Officer of Compute at OpenAI, a year after joining the artificial intelligence company.
A computer science graduate of Chaitanya Bharathi Institute of Technology in Hyderabad, Ruddaraju began his career with an internship at Amazon Web Services while still in college. He later moved to the United States to earn a master’s degree in computer science from the University of Minnesota Twin Cities before joining eBay, where he worked from 2013 to 2018. He subsequently held engineering roles at Robinhood and xAI before making the move to OpenAI.
Ruddaraju said the past year had been “incredibly rewarding,” crediting the compute team for rapidly expanding capacity while building the systems required to train frontier models, including GPT-5.6. He said OpenAI’s next phase would center on expanding its AI infrastructure.
Before joining OpenAI, Ruddaraju served as Head of Infrastructure Engineering at xAI. His departure drew attention in the AI industry, with reports describing him as one of OpenAI’s most prominent hires from Elon Musk’s company.
