SEATTLE, WA – Seattle marked a historic celebration of India’s 79th Independence Day as the Indian national flag was hoisted for the first time ever atop the city’s iconic Space Needle.
The milestone, hailed by Mayor Bruce Harrell, represents a proud moment for the Indian diaspora in Seattle and the wider Pacific Northwest.
“Honored to celebrate India’s 79th Independence Day — from raising the Indian flag at the Space Needle for the first time to today’s parade downtown,” Mayor Harrell tweeted. “These moments highlight Seattle’s commitment to inclusion and the deep bonds we share with India and our Indian American community!”

Festivities continued at scenic Kerry Park, where members of the Indian American community gathered to witness the tricolor soaring against the Seattle skyline.
Local governments joined in the celebrations, with King County, Seattle, Tacoma, Bellevue, and Spokane issuing proclamations recognizing the occasion. Several iconic landmarks across Seattle and Tacoma were illuminated in the Indian tricolor, further showcasing the city’s tribute.
The Independence Day celebrations also featured for the first time, an Indian parade downtown, bringing together thousands of residents and community leaders to honor India’s journey toward freedom and the contributions of the Indian American community to the region.
