Jayapal Condemns Supreme Court Ruling Allowing Racial Profiling

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Representative Pramila Jayapal (D-WA) sharply criticized the Supreme Court’s recent decision permitting the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to engage in racial profiling, including targeting individuals who speak Spanish or appear Latino. The ruling overturned a lower court decision that had blocked such practices.

Jayapal, the Ranking Member of the Immigration, Integrity, Security, and Enforcement Subcommittee, described the decision as a “violation of our freedoms” in a statement released Wednesday. She argued that the Supreme Court is enabling an “authoritarian” administration and undermining public trust in the nation’s highest judicial body.

“This ruling is a massive disservice to our country and our Constitution,” Jayapal said. She cited other contentious Supreme Court actions, including permitting the Trump administration to cut funding from the National Institutes of Health, using the Alien Enemies Act to justify deportations, and firing federal workers without cause.

Jayapal stressed that the Supreme Court should serve as a guardian of constitutional rights, not as a “rubber stamp” for the current administration. “The American people deserve better than a court that tramples on their rights,” she said.

The ruling has sparked widespread debate about the limits of law enforcement authority and the potential for discriminatory practices under federal immigration policy. Critics argue it could disproportionately impact Latino and Spanish-speaking communities, raising concerns about civil liberties and equal protection under the law.
