BAKERSFIELD, CA – With the June 2 primary election rapidly approaching, the battle for California’s 22nd Congressional District has intensified into a high-stakes deadlock between the two leading Democratic challengers. According to a recent report from Bakersfield.com, Assemblywoman Dr. Jasmeet Bains is surging in a statistical dead heat with Visalia Unified School District board member Randy Villegas, with less than $20,000 now separating their respective campaign war chests.

While Villegas entered the month with a slight advantage in total cash on hand, the latest Federal Election Commission data  shows in the first quarter of 2026, Bains successfully outpaced Villegas in fundraising, pulling in $457,313 between January and March. This local surge has brought her total fundraising to $1.1 million, allowing her to narrow the gap significantly against Villegas, who has raised a total of $1.3 million since launching his campaign a year ago.

Bains has leveraged this financial competitiveness to bolster her image as a crisis-tested leader. In a statement addressing the recent filings, the Bains campaign emphasized that the numbers reflect growing voter enthusiasm for a candidate who understands the Valley’s unique struggles. Bains, a physician from Delano, has consistently framed her candidacy through the lens of her medical expertise, arguing that the same problem-solving skills she uses to manage healthcare emergencies are required to fix what she describes as a “crisis” in the region’s economy and fundamental rights.

Despite the narrow margin between the two Democrats, both remain significantly behind the Republican incumbent.

This lack of a clear Democratic frontrunner follows a February convention where neither Bains nor Villegas secured the official party endorsement, leaving local voters divided, Bakersfield.com noted. Under California’s open primary system, only the top two vote-getters will advance to the November general election.
