Sarah Jukaku: The Indian American Wife Of Senate Candidate Abdul El-Sayed

DETROIT, MI – Dr.Abdul El-Sayed, the public health expert and progressive Democrat, who made national headlines when he won Michigan’s Democratic Senate primary, has an India connection. He is married to Dr. Sarah Jukaku, a psychiatrist whose parents immigrated to the United States from India.

Jukaku, who is a psychiatrist, met El-Sayed while the two were students at the University of Michigan. Both of them went on to get their medical degrees from Columbia University. Candidate El-Sayed is also a Rhodes scholar. They have two daughters, Emmalee and Serene.

Jukaku’s parents came to the United States from a village in India and she retains ties to India.

In financial disclosures filed in July 2026, Jukaku reported owning two rental properties outside the United States, one in Bengaluru and another in Dubai, Indian media reports said. The Bengaluru property is valued between $100,001 and $250,000 and generates an estimated $5,001 to $15,000 in annual rental income. The other property is in Dubai.

El-Sayed in his book ‘Healing Politics: A Doctor’s Journey into the Heart of Our Political Epidemic,’ has written about Jukaku and her role in his life and family. He describes Jukaku’s “quiet confidence” and writes about how she helped him better understand his emotional world. He has referred to her as his “rock” and credited her with being a central presence in their family.

El-Sayed’s own family background includes immigration as well. His father, Mohamed, came to the United States from Egypt, while his mother, Dr. Fatten Elkomy, works as a nurse practitioner in Missouri. He was also raised by his stepmother, Jackie, whose family has longstanding ties to Michigan.

El-Sayed defeated Representative Haley Stevens in the Democratic primary and will face Republican Mike Rogers in November. If elected, El-Sayed would become the first Muslim elected to the U.S. Senate.
