Actor Mourns Bengali Cinema’s Lack Of  Visibility In India

NEW DELHI-Bengali cinema may boast an unquestionable legacy and a rich contribution to world cinema, but Bengali superstar Jeet feels it has not always received the recognition it deserves in mainstream India.

Talking about Hollywood filmmaker Christopher Nolan’s praise for legendary Indian filmmaker Satyajit Ray’s ‘Pather Panchali’, Jeet expressed hope that authentic and powerful storytelling will eventually bring Bengali cinema the wider recognition it deserves.

Nolan had described Satyajit Ray as one of the greatest filmmakers ever and called ‘Pather Panchali’ an “absolutely incredible film.”

Asked whether Bengali cinema, despite its immense global legacy, does not get the recognition it deserves in mainstream India, Jeet said, “It’s really unfortunate in a way that a cinema culture which has contributed so much to world cinema doesn’t always get the recognition it deserves in mainstream India.”

He added, “Bengali cinema has never lacked greatness—it has only lacked the scale of visibility that some other industries enjoy. Our legacy is unquestionable, and I believe that if we continue telling authentic, powerful stories, recognition will naturally follow. Great cinema always finds its audience.”

Jeet is gearing up for the release of ‘Keu Bole Biplabi Keu Bole Dakat’, directed by Pathikrit Basu, a biographical action drama based on Indian revolutionary Anant Singh. Set in 1960s Kolkata, the film also stars Tota Roy Chowdhury, Kaushik Sen, Rajatabha Dutta, Chandan Sen, Loknath Dey and Mimi Chakraborty. (IANS)
