Arnav Paparkar’s Wimbledon Journey Ends, But History Is Written
LONDON – Arnav Paparkar’s impressive run at the 2026 Wimbledon Junior Championships came to an end on July 9 after he lost 2-6, 5-7 to American Jordan Lee in the boys’ singles quarterfinals.
Despite the defeat, the 18-year-old from Pune made history by becoming the first Indian in 36 years to reach the Wimbledon boys’ singles quarterfinals since Leander Paes won the junior title in 1990.
Paparkar reached the last eight with a series of commanding performances, including one of the tournament’s biggest upsets when he defeated junior World No. 3 Keaton Hance of the United States 6-2, 6-3. He then beat Japan’s Ryo Tabata 6-2, 6-1 to book his maiden Grand Slam junior quarterfinal.
Leander Paes is one of only three Indians to have won the Wimbledon boys’ singles title, alongside Ramanathan Krishnan and Ramesh Krishnan.
Following his victory over Tabata, Paparkar said reaching his first Grand Slam junior quarterfinal at Wimbledon was a special milestone.
“I had lost to Ryo twice before, so finally getting the win feels great. This is also my first Grand Slam quarterfinal, and to achieve that at Wimbledon makes it even more special,” he said.
Former India Davis Cup captain Anand Amritraj also praised the youngster’s all-round game during the tournament, calling Paparkar “a complete player with a bright future.” (With IANS inputs)
