WASHINGTON, DC – The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has issued a Level 2 travel advisory for individuals traveling to Telangana, particularly members of the diaspora, following a surge in chikungunya cases among returning travelers.

Chikungunya, a mosquito-borne virus, has been detected at higher-than-expected rates among U.S. travelers from the Indian state. To reduce infection risk, the CDC urges travelers to adopt mosquito-prevention measures, such as using insect repellents, wearing long-sleeved clothing, and staying in accommodations with air conditioning or screened windows and doors.

Vaccination Guidance
The CDC recommends chikungunya vaccination for individuals aged 18 and older traveling to outbreak-affected regions. However, the vaccine is not suitable for everyone. “People with weakened immune systems or those with a history of severe allergic reactions to vaccine components should avoid it,” the CDC advised.

Pregnant individuals are urged to reconsider travel to Telangana, particularly in late pregnancy, due to the potential risk of mother-to-child virus transmission. “Infants exposed around delivery face a higher risk of severe illness and poor long-term outcomes,” the CDC stated.

Vaccination during pregnancy is typically deferred, but exceptions may be made for those at high risk of infection. The CDC recommends that pregnant travelers consult healthcare providers to weigh risks and benefits. Vaccination, if necessary, should generally be avoided during the first trimester and after the 36th week of pregnancy.

Symptoms and Medical Attention
Travelers are advised to seek medical care if they experience symptoms such as fever, joint pain, headache, muscle pain, rash, or joint swelling during or after their trip. These signs could indicate chikungunya infection, and timely treatment can help manage the disease effectively.

Staying Vigilant
The CDC’s advisory highlights the need for heightened awareness and precaution among travelers to help curb the spread of chikungunya and safeguard public health. By taking proactive steps, travelers can protect themselves and others from this mosquito-borne virus.
