SAN FRANCISCO, CA – On January 7, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman responded to allegations of sexual assault made by his estranged younger sister, Annie Altman, calling the claims “entirely untrue.” The accusations, which were outlined in a lawsuit filed on January 6, claim that Sam sexually assaulted Annie over a nine-year period in the 1990s and 2000s. These allegations echo those Annie had made on social media in 2021.

In response to the lawsuit, Sam Altman issued a statement that included input from his brothers, Max and Jack, as well as their mother, Connie. The Altman family strongly denied the accusations and expressed concern for Annie’s well-being, noting that she has struggled with mental health challenges for several years. The family emphasized their attempts to offer support, including financial assistance over the years.

The family’s statement reads, “Despite this, Annie continues to demand more money from us. In this vein, Annie has made deeply hurtful and entirely untrue claims about our family, and especially Sam. We’ve chosen not to respond publicly, out of respect for her privacy and our own. However, she has now taken legal action against Sam, and we feel we have no choice but to address this.”

The statement also referenced past accusations Annie had made, including claims that family members withheld their father’s 401k funds, hacked her Wi-Fi, and shadow-banned her from websites like ChatGPT and Twitter. The most serious allegation, however, is that she was sexually abused by Sam as a child, with Annie also accusing others of abuse. Her claims, according to the family, have changed significantly over time, and in the new lawsuit, they now include allegations involving incidents when Sam was over the age of 18.

Sam Altman and Annie have long been estranged, as noted in a 2023 profile of Sam Altman in New York Magazine. The piece highlighted how Sam frequently mentions his brothers, who are also tech entrepreneurs and investors, but rarely speaks of Annie. It was reported that Annie had once asked Sam to promote her podcast, a request Sam declined. Despite their strained relationship, the profile mentioned that Sam had offered Annie money, gifts, and even to buy her a house in an effort to support her.

The New York Magazine profile also touched on concerns about Annie’s mental health, describing her as having an unstable personal life and noting that she moved 20 times in a single year. The death of their father, Jerry, in 2018 was cited as a turning point in Annie’s mental health struggles.
