Chef Harpal Singh Sokhi Recalls Teaching Anjali Tendulkar His Signature Recipe
MUMBAI — Celebrity chef Harpal Singh Sokhi has many stories from his decades in the kitchen, but one memory stands out: teaching Anjali Tendulkar, then girlfriend of cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar, how to cook his famous Kaali Dal.
The moment dates back to Sokhi’s early years at his Colaba restaurant, Vintage. “Sachin, who was about 21 or 22 at the time, was a regular at Vintage,” Sokhi recalled. “He loved our Hyderabadi dishes—Patthar Ka Gosht, Kaali Dal, and biryani.”
According to Sokhi, Tendulkar’s fondness for these dishes soon led to an unusual request. “One day, Sachin told me he was getting married to Anjali and asked me to teach her how to prepare his favorite dishes so he could enjoy them at home,” Sokhi said with a smile.
Anjali later visited the restaurant’s kitchen on two quiet afternoons, when it was closed to customers. Under Sokhi’s guidance, she learned to cook Kaali Dal and a few other specialties. “That remains one of the most cherished memories of my career,” he said.
Today, Sokhi is best known for his television persona, his trademark “Namak Shamak” catchphrase, and his popular restaurant chain, Karigari. Reflecting on the business of food, he emphasized the importance of personal connection. “If you are both the face and the owner of the brand, you must dedicate yourself wholeheartedly. You need to be omnipresent and stay engaged with your guests,” he explained.
For Sokhi, feedback—positive or negative—is an essential part of that engagement. “Even when someone doesn’t enjoy their meal, they share their concerns with warmth. I am truly grateful, because it helps us improve.”
Sokhi was recently seen in the second season of Laughter Chefs – Unlimited Entertainment, adding yet another chapter to his vibrant career. (ANI)
