Devajit Saikia Replaces Jay Shah As BCCI Secretary
India-West News Desk
MUMBAI – In a significant reshuffle, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on January 13 named Devajit Saikia as its new Secretary and Prabhtej Singh Bhatia as the Treasurer. The duo, the only nominees for these roles, were “elected unopposed,” a press release said.
Saikia, 55, succeeds Jay Shah, who stepped down from the position to assume the role of Chairman of the International Cricket Council (ICC). Previously, Saikia had been serving as the interim Joint Secretary of the BCCI, and his promotion to full-time Secretary followed Shah’s departure. While Saikia remains largely unknown to cricket fans due to his modest playing career—he represented Assam in just four first-class matches—his administrative journey has been closely linked with Assam’s BJP-led state government. His relationship with Himanta Biswa Sarma, Assam’s Chief Minister and a key BJP figure, has played a significant role in his rise in cricket administration.
Prabhtej Singh Bhatia takes over as the BCCI Treasurer following the resignation of Ashish Shelar, who vacated the position due to his new role in the Maharashtra government.
BCCI President Roger Binny congratulated the newly elected officials, commending their administrative skills and expressing confidence in their ability to continue the legacy of former office-bearers. He added that Saikia and Bhatia’s leadership would strengthen both governance and financial management within Indian cricket.
