Duffer Brothers Credit Shyamalan For Inspiring ‘Stranger Things’ Creative Vision

LOS ANGELES, CA – M. Night Shyamalan may not be part of the ‘Stranger Things’ writers room, but his influence is on the creative DNA say its creators.
As the Duffer Brothers gear up for the fifth and final season of Netflix’s blockbuster series, they are openly crediting Shyamalan as one of the storytellers who shaped their instincts. In a new conversation with Variety, Matt Duffer said that watching Shyamalan’s career — particularly how he bounced back from a misfire to deliver the cultural earthquake that was ‘The Sixth Sense’ — helped define their own appetite for risk and originality.
Matt said Shyamalan’s refusal to abandon bold, self-driven storytelling made a deep impression. The brothers grew up on his films, absorbing his mix of suspense, emotional stakes, and the uncanny. Those qualities, they say, became part of the creative framework that eventually evolved into ‘Stranger Things’.
The Duffers have cited their other influence has being HBO’s ‘Game of Thrones.’
