NEW DELHI (ANI)- Renowned folk singer and Padma Shri awardee Malini Awasthi continues to showcase the universal appeal of India’s rich folk traditions.

Her recent collaboration with Vishal Mishra, Holi Aye Re from Coke Studio Bharat, made history by entering Spotify’s Global Top 100—one of the most successful Indian folk songs on the international stage.

Expressing her joy, Awasthi said, “This was always my intention—to take Indian folk music beyond its traditional boundaries.”

She addressed misconceptions that folk music is limited to rural audiences, emphasizing its richness and growing presence in mainstream entertainment. She cited examples such as Jamal Jamaloo Kudu in Animal and Raja Ji in Panchayat, proving that authentic folk music still resonates widely.

On whether folk music should adapt to modern styles, she remarked, “Folk music has survived for centuries because it evolves naturally. If it didn’t, we wouldn’t still be singing it today.”

Awasthi also reflected on gender dynamics in folk traditions, highlighting how she introduced a female perspective to Jogi Ra, a song traditionally performed by men.

Her performances have taken her worldwide, from Holi celebrations in Dubai to cultural festivals in the U.S. and Germany. Despite its deep local roots, she noted that folk music’s themes—love, separation, longing—transcend borders.

Beyond music, Awasthi has also worked to preserve Indian traditions through literature. Her latest book, Chandan Kiwad, was launched at the Jaipur Literature Festival 2025.

Awasthi has also contributed to Bollywood, singing for films like Bhaiyya Ji and Dum Laga Ke Haisha.
