Women Dominate Voter Turnout In Assam, Kerala, Puducherry

GUWAHATI- Women voters outperformed men in turnout percentages in Assam, Kerala and Puducherry in the April 9 Assembly elections, with record participation recorded in Assam and Puducherry, according to Election Commission of India data.

In Assam, women turnout stood at 86.50 per cent, higher than the male turnout of 85.33 per cent, helping push the overall voting percentage to a record 85.91 per cent, surpassing the previous high of 84.67 per cent in the 2016 Assembly elections.

Puducherry recorded a women’s turnout of 91.40 per cent, higher than the male turnout of 88.13 per cent, contributing to an overall polling percentage of 89.87 per cent.

In Kerala, women turnout stood at 81.19 per cent, compared to 75.19 per cent among men, and higher than the previous record of 80.58 per cent in the 1987 Assembly elections. However, the overall turnout in the state was 78.27 per cent, below its all-time high of 85.77 per cent recorded in 1960.

Election officials attributed the high overall turnout in Assam and Puducherry to strong participation by women voters. (IANS)
