EWING, NJ – GS1 US, the nonprofit organization that develops and maintains supply chain and retail standards in the United States, has elected three new members to its Board of Governors, including Google engineering leader Senthil Subramanian.

Subramanian, principal engineer and area technical lead at Google, joins the board alongside Steven Chyung, senior vice president and chief supply chain and procurement officer at Kaiser Permanente, and Omar A. Tovar, chief logistics officer at Urban Outfitters.

The appointments come as companies across industries increasingly rely on digital innovation, interoperable data standards, and more resilient supply chain systems.

At Google, Subramanian leads the Shopping Graph, overseeing large-scale product datasets that power consumer experiences across Google Search, YouTube, and digital advertising platforms. His work focuses on organizing and scaling product information used by millions of consumers and businesses worldwide.

Before joining Google in 2021, Subramanian spent nearly two decades in senior engineering and architecture roles at Yahoo and Verizon Media. His work there included leadership in advertising infrastructure, targeting systems, ad exchanges, publisher ad-serving platforms, and inventory forecasting technologies.

He was also a founding member of the original Hadoop team, contributing to the development of open-source big data infrastructure during a formative period for internet-scale computing.

GS1 US said the newly elected members will help guide U.S. strategy related to digital transformation, supply chain operations, and large-scale data management. The Board of Governors includes executives from major companies such as Amazon, The Coca-Cola Company, Johnson & Johnson, Kroger, PepsiCo, Target, and Walmart.

“At a time when supply chains are being reshaped by digital transformation and rising complexity, these leaders bring invaluable perspective to help industry advance large-scale data management, supply chain operations and global logistics,” GS1 US President and CEO Bob Carpenter said in a statement.

Subramanian said technologies including artificial intelligence, automation, agentic commerce, and Answer Engine Optimization are making trusted product identity and standardized data increasingly essential to digital commerce.

“Excited to collaborate with leaders across industries as a GS1 US Board member to help shape the future of connected commerce and interoperable data standards,” he said.

Subramanian holds a Master of Science in computer science from The University of Texas at Dallas and a bachelor’s degree in computer science from University of Madras. He also completed the Engineering Leadership Professional Program at University of California, Berkeley.
