MEXICO CITY (Reuters) – The name “Gulf of Mexico” is internationally recognized, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said on January 8, responding to President-elect Donald Trump’s suggestion to rename the body of water.

Trump had proposed renaming the Gulf of Mexico to the “Gulf of America” on January 6.

Sheinbaum, seizing the opportunity to mock Trump, quipped that he seemed out of touch with reality. “I think they told President-elect Trump wrong; they told him Felipe Calderón is still president,” she said. Calderón served as Mexico’s president from 2006 to 2012.

“But no, in Mexico, the people are in charge,” Sheinbaum added.

During a press conference, Sheinbaum also displayed a map of Mexico’s former territory, which included land now part of the United States. “Mexican America, that sounds nice,” she said with a smile.
