CHENNAI – Renowned Indian composer Ilaiyaraaja made history by becoming the first Asian musician from the film industry to present a Western classical symphony in London. His symphony, titled Valiant, debuted at the Eventim Apollo Theatre on March 9, accompanied by the prestigious Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in a special performance.

This event marked a significant milestone in Ilaiyaraaja’s illustrious career. He is among the first Indian composers to incorporate Western classical elements into film music and the first from South Asia to compose a full-length symphony. Valiant was recorded with the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, and a behind-the-scenes video shared by the composer revealed his spontaneous decision to create the symphony.

In addition to premiering Valiant, Ilaiyaraaja also treated the audience to orchestral renditions of some of his most celebrated film compositions. His past works, including albums like How To Name It and Nothing But Wind, further showcase his innovative approach to music.

With a career spanning over four decades, Ilaiyaraaja has composed music for more than a thousand films, predominantly in Tamil and Telugu cinema. Born in 1943 in Pannaipuram, Theni district, he has been instrumental in blending folk rhythms with classical techniques, revolutionizing South Indian film music. His works continue to resonate with audiences, with timeless classics like Machana Pathingala (Annakili, 1975), Thenpaandi Cheemayile (Nayagan, 1987), and Janani Janani (Thaai Moogambhigai, 1982) standing as testaments to his musical genius.
