NEW DELHI, (ANI) – Over the past five years, the government has received 1,617 complaints from Non-Resident Indian (NRI) women who claim they were abandoned by their husbands abroad, the Ministry of External Affairs shared in Parliament on March 27.
While data on women whose husbands leave them in India and settle abroad is collected by state governments, the MEA tracks complaints from women who are left behind overseas.
Indian missions and consulates abroad provide counseling, legal guidance, and emergency help through 24×7 helplines.
In cases of abandonment, the MEA coordinates with state authorities to handle such cases under existing laws.
