CHANDIGARH – In a move aimed at highlighting Lahore’s layered cultural past, Pakistan’s Punjab government has cleared a proposal to restore several historic pre-Partition names of roads, neighborhoods and public sites across the city.

The decision was taken during a Punjab Cabinet meeting led by Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, a Punjab government official told PTI.

The initiative is part of a broader effort to reconnect Lahore with its historical identity and acknowledge the city’s Hindu, Sikh and colonial-era heritage. Officials said a number of localities and roads had undergone name changes over the years, with many original names replaced after Partition.

Among the locations proposed for restoration are Krishan Nagar, Laxmi Chowk, Dharampura, Mohan Lal Bazaar, Bhagwan Pura and Shanti Nagar. The list also includes Sant Nagar Jain Mandir Road and major thoroughfares such as Queen’s Road, Lawrence Road and Empress Road.

Alongside the renaming initiative, former Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has proposed reviving historic sports and cultural spaces inside Minto Park, now known as Greater Iqbal Park.

The proposal includes the restoration of three old cricket grounds that before Partition saw Indian cricket great Lala Amarnath train at the venue. Before 1947, Minto Park was widely recognized as a venue for Dussehra festivities organized by Lahore’s Hindu community, PTI noted.

  • Good, perhaps now it is India’s turn to restore all names to its original names. Ahmedabad and Allahabad comes to mind, lots of other names like Mirzapur, am sure there are many many more. That being said, Pak move may have ulterior motives, like in being considered for “World Heritage sites” that can generate outside funds$$$
