NEW DELHI (ANI)- India is working with the U.S. on procedural issues for the early extradition of Tahawwur Rana, Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said on January 31.

“You would have seen that on January 21, the U.S. Supreme Court declined a petition from the accused. With that, it looks like his appeal in the matter has been dismissed. We are now working with the U.S. side on procedural issues for early extradition to India of the accused in the Mumbai terror attack,” Jaiswal said.

On January 28, the U.S. State Department stated it is evaluating the next steps regarding Rana’s extradition. “We have long supported India’s efforts to ensure the perpetrators of the Mumbai terrorist attacks face justice,” a spokesperson said.

Pakistani-origin businessman Tahawwur Hussain Rana, convicted for his role in the 26/11 Mumbai attacks that killed 164 people, could now be extradited to India. His co-conspirators included David Headley, who pleaded guilty and cooperated against him.

On January 21, the U.S. Supreme Court denied Rana’s petition challenging an earlier ruling in favor of his extradition. The 26/11 Mumbai attacks, which targeted the Taj Hotel and other locations on November 26, 2008, resulted in 174 deaths, including 20 security personnel and 26 foreigners, with over 300 injured.
