WASHINGTON, DC (ANI)- Pakistani-origin businessman Tahawwur Hussain Rana, convicted for his involvement in the 26/11 Mumbai attacks that killed 164 people, is set to be extradited to India.

On January 21, the U.S. Supreme Court denied Rana’s petition to block his extradition. The petition, filed in November 2024, challenged a lower court’s earlier decision approving the extradition.

Rana was previously prosecuted in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois. He was convicted of conspiring to provide material support to terrorism in Denmark and supporting Lashkar-e-Taiba. On January 7, 2013, he was sentenced to 14 years in prison.

India has charged Rana with serious crimes, including waging war, murder, forgery, and terrorism. He has remained in custody throughout the extradition process.

In May 2023, a magistrate judge certified Rana as extraditable, dismissing his objections. This decision was upheld by the Ninth Circuit Court in August 2024, which rejected his appeal.

The case then went to the U.S. Secretary of State for a final decision. Rana’s last effort to overturn the Ninth Circuit’s ruling—a petition filed with the Supreme Court—was denied, paving the way for his extradition.
