Indian American Impact Spending In Illinois Senate Race Draws Attention

CHICAGO, IL – The battle for the open US Senate seat in Illinois is rapidly becoming one of the most closely watched Democratic primaries in the country, shaped by heavy spending and competing political alliances.
The contest was triggered by the retirement of longtime senator Dick Durbin and among the leading contenders are Raja Krishnamoorthi, Juliana Stratton, and Robin Kelly. The race has drawn particular attention because of the role of Illinois governor JB Pritzker, who has poured millions of his personal fortune into supporting his longtime political ally Stratton, the state’s lieutenant governor.
The financial backing has helped elevate Stratton’s campaign but has also intensified rivalries within the Democratic field. Analysts say the dynamics are particularly significant among Black voters, a key constituency in the state’s Democratic primary electorate. With both Stratton and Kelly seeking to consolidate support in that bloc, the vote is increasingly seen as divided between the two women, creating an opening for the popular Krishnamoorthi to expand his base across other segments of the electorate.
Against this backdrop, the advocacy organization Indian American Impact has stepped in forcefully to defend Krishnamoorthi and shape the narrative around the race. In a statement posted on the social media platform X, the group praised the congressman’s positions on immigration enforcement, economic issues, and his opposition to the political movement associated with Donald Trump.
“Raja Krishnamoorthi has strong support from Indian Americans because he’s fighting for the issues that matter most: standing up to Trump, ICE abuses and MAGA extremism while working to lower costs for working families,” the organization wrote.
Indian American Impact also framed its support in the context of rising hostility toward South Asian communities in the United States, arguing that leaders such as Krishnamoorthi are helping expand representation for the community while advocating broader economic and social priorities.
“At a time when South Asian Americans are facing unprecedented levels of hate and suspicion, many people are rallying behind leaders like Raja who not only ensure our community has a seat at the table, but are working to make that table bigger for everyone,” the group said.
The organization’s political arm, The Impact Fund, has been active in the race. Federal filings with the Federal Election Commission show the PAC has committed roughly $1 million to the contest this year, including digital advertising critical of Stratton while supporting both Krishnamoorthi and Kelly.
The strategy has drawn attention because it effectively boosts Kelly at a moment when she and Stratton are competing for many of the same voters. Krishnamoorthi and Kelly have long maintained friendly political ties, and the PAC’s spending pattern has been interpreted by some observers as indirectly benefiting the congressman by fragmenting support among his rivals.
