NEWTOWN SQUARE, PA – A milestone moment for Indian American representation will unfold at the 2026 PGA Championship, where two golfers will compete together in a major for the first time, highlighting the community’s growing presence at the highest level of global golf.
Indian American golfers Akshay Bhatia and Sahith Theegala will be joined by Aaron Rai of Britain and Indian Canadian Sudarshan Yellamaraju. Their participation at Aronimink Golf Club marks a breakthrough moment for athletes of Indian heritage in a sport where such representation has long been limited.
Bhatia arrives as one of the most prominent young Indian American names on the PGA Tour. The 24-year-old has built strong momentum this season, highlighted by a victory at the Arnold Palmer Invitational — his third PGA Tour title — along with notable performances at The Players Championship and other elite tournaments. His rise reflects a broader shift, as more Indian American athletes begin to break through in traditionally less diverse professional sports.
Theegala, widely regarded as one of the most exciting Indian American golfers on tour, has earned a reputation for his fearless, high-risk style of play. His consistent finishes this season, including strong showings at the Farmers Insurance Open and the Arnold Palmer Invitational, have further cemented his status as a fan favorite and a key figure in expanding South Asian visibility in golf.
While Rai represents England and Yellamaraju Canada, both add to the broader Indian diaspora story shaping this year’s field. Rai’s steady, disciplined approach has made him one of the most reliable performers on tour, while Yellamaraju’s journey — largely self-taught through online resources — underscores a new, unconventional pathway into elite golf for players from diverse backgrounds.
The historic representation comes in a field that also includes defending champion Scottie Scheffler and major winner Rory McIlroy, among others competing for the Wanamaker Trophy. (with IANS inputs)
