Jaya Bachchan Questions Free Speech Limits Amid Kunal Kamra Controversy
NEW DELHI (ANI)- Amid the controversy over stand-up comedian Kunal Kamra’s remarks, political figures, including Samajwadi Party MP Jaya Bachchan and Shiv Sena (UBT) MPs, have defended Kamra’s freedom of expression and condemned the vandalism at the Mumbai venue where his show was filmed.
A video clip of a skit Kamra posted on his Instagram profile on March 23 showed him taunting Shinde in a parody song. Kamra’s use of the term “traitor” particularly angered Shiv Sena party workers.
Speaking in Parliament, Jaya Bachchan criticized restrictions on speech, stating, “If there is a restriction on speaking, what will become of you? Where is freedom of speech?” She also took a dig at Maharashtra CM Eknath Shinde, questioning his political actions.
Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Arvind Sawant backed Kamra, asserting that every statement in his special Naya Bharat was accurate.
MP Priyanka Chaturvedi condemned the vandalism at Habitat Comedy Club, calling it a sign of growing intolerance. She noted that Kamra’s joke did not directly name Deputy CM Eknath Shinde but merely hinted at it.
FIRs have been filed against both Kamra for his remarks and the vandals for their actions.
