LOS ANGELES, CA – Kal Penn, 47, recently revisited his early career in the entertainment industry during an episode of the Pod Meets World podcast. Speaking with the show’s stars Danielle Fishel, Rider Strong, and Will Friedle, Penn reminisced about his brief appearance as an extra in the Boy Meets World season 4 episode, “Quiz Show.”
Penn recalled how he was recognized by a fan for the small role, which left a lasting impact on him, especially because of the positive experience he had on set. Unlike many other shows where extras were often treated poorly, Penn praised the cast and crew for making him feel welcome. “Being on Boy Meets World was like night and day,” he said, highlighting how the show’s atmosphere stood out as an uplifting and supportive environment.
Looking back, Penn, on January 12, shared the challenges of securing extra work in his early days, including daily calls to casting agencies. Despite the difficulties, his time on Boy Meets World served as a bright spot. “It seemed like you guys all really loved this job,” Penn told the hosts, noting that the cast’s passion for their work inspired him as a budding actor.
Though he didn’t tell his family and friends about his extra role before the episode aired, Penn recalled the excitement when the moment was confirmed. “It was a big deal,” he said, adding that his mom was thrilled and shared the news with her friends.
Two years later, Penn signed with his first agent, Barbara Cameron, and soon began landing television roles. His career breakthrough came with the 2004 film Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle.
