JERSEY CITY, NJ – Jersey City’s runoff election delivered a historic breakthrough Tuesday night with the election of Mamta Singh as Council At Large, the first Indian American ever elected to public office in the city’s history. While James Solomon’s decisive mayoral victory on December 2 grabbed headlines, Singh’s win carries its own far reaching significance for a community that has long shaped Jersey City’s identity without ever holding a seat in City Hall.
Singh’s rise is rooted in years of hands on community work. A nonprofit leader and organizer, she founded JCFamilies, one of Jersey City’s most active grassroots networks supporting women, children, and working parents. She also created Indians In Jersey City, a group that brings together immigrant families and celebrates the cultural traditions of one of the city’s largest communities.
Running on Solomon’s Team Solomon slate alongside Rolando Lavarro and Michael Griffin, Singh campaigned on stabilizing property taxes, expanding recreation options for youth, and strengthening services for working families.
Jersey City is home to several thousand Indian American residents whose presence is visible in its neighborhoods, small businesses, festivals, and schools.
