EVIAN (FRANCE)- Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney reviewed the full range of bilateral relations on June 16 during a meeting on the sidelines of the G7 Summit in Evian, France.

The two leaders welcomed the positive momentum in India-Canada relations, noting the progress achieved since Carney’s visit to India in March 2026. Reaffirming their commitment to a strategic partnership, the leaders emphasized the importance of resilient supply chains in strengthening global energy and food security.

The discussion covered bilateral economic cooperation, including progress on commercial arrangements for LNG, LPG, and metallurgical coal. The Prime Ministers acknowledged recent high-level exchanges, including the visit of the Indian Minister of Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal to Canada, and announced that the Canadian Minister of International Trade Maninder Sidhu will lead a trade mission to India later in 2026.

Both sides reaffirmed their objective of concluding negotiations for a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement by the end of 2026. To further deepen defense and security cooperation, the Prime Ministers agreed to launch negotiations on a General Security of Information Agreement. They also noted recent exchanges between defense institutions, including the visit of the National Defense College of India to Canada.

The leaders welcomed the strengthening of institutional engagement, such as the recent meetings of the Joint Science and Technology Committee and the Consular Dialogue, while looking forward to forthcoming discussions on finance and migration. They also reviewed progress under the Canada-India Talent and Innovation Strategy, which includes initiatives for skill development and educational cooperation.

Modi expressed India’s support for Canada becoming a Dialogue Partner of the Indian Ocean Rim Association. Additionally, the leaders announced the establishment of Raisina Americas as a platform to strengthen dialogue and cooperation. Modi accepted an invitation from Prime Minister Carney to visit Canada later in 2026, with details to be finalized through diplomatic channels. (IANS)
