Nagesh Kukunoor’s ‘The Hunt’ Reopens Rajiv Gandhi Assassination Case
MUMBAI (IANS)- National Award-winning filmmaker Nagesh Kukunoor is set to bring the harrowing story of the former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi’s assassination to the screen with his new series, “The Hunt: The Rajiv Gandhi Assassination Case.”
The project is a cinematic adaptation of investigative journalist Anirudhya Mitra’s bestselling book, Ninety Days.
The video preview highlights a disregarded death threat to Rajiv Gandhi preceding the assassination, and then delves into the subsequent investigation. It reveals how the Special Investigation Team was actively searching for an individual working closely with the suicide bomber. The series is expected to explore the complexities of establishing accountability for the incident, with the preview indicating that many fingers were pointed during the investigation. The extent of artistic liberty taken in the show remains to be seen.
Rajiv Gandhi was assassinated on May 21, 1991, during an election rally in Sriperumbudur, Tamil Nadu, by a female suicide bomber who was a member of the banned Sri Lankan Tamil separatist rebel organization, Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam.
The film will stream on Sony LIV from July 4.
