Ranveer Clarifies: Mimicry Was Not About Mocking Hindu Goddess

MUMBAI- Actor Ranveer Singh has issued a heartfelt apology after facing criticism for mimicking Rishab Shetty’s portrayal of the Daiva from Kantara Chapter 1 during the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) 2025.

Ranveer attempted to recreate the film’s climactic sequence where Rishab Shetty is possessed by the Chamundi Daiva. Following the event, the Hindu Janajagruti Samiti (HJS) lodged an official complaint against the actor, alleging that he had hurt religious sentiments.

The controversy was further fueled by a viral video where Ranveer referred to the sacred Chamundi Daiva as a “Female ghost,” sparking significant backlash from netizens who pointed out that Chamundi is revered as a Goddess, not a spectral being. The Kantara franchise highlights the gods and goddesses worshipped by the Tulu community of Karnataka, where Daiva festivals are celebrated with deep reverence.

On his Instagram Stories, Ranveer clarified his intentions: “My intention was to highlight Rishabh’s incredible performance in the film. Actor to actor, I know how much it would take to perform that particular scene… for which he has my utmost admiration.” He emphasized his deep respect for every culture, tradition, and belief in India.

Ranveer’s apology concluded: “If I’ve hurt anyone’s sentiments, I sincerely apologize.”

Notably, Rishab Shetty, who was present in the audience, reportedly tried to stop Ranveer during the act, signaling with his finger to remind him that Daiva portrayals are sacred and not meant for casual reenactment, a warning Ranveer later acknowledged. (IANS)
