LONDON- Former UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has joined Goldman Sachs as a senior advisor, marking his return to the investment bank where he previously worked. The company announced on July 8 that Sunak, who resigned as PM in July 2024, will work part-time, offering his “unique perspectives and insights” on global politics and the economy to the bank’s clients.

David Solomon, Chairman and CEO of Goldman Sachs, expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “I am excited to welcome Rishi back” to the firm. Solomon added that Sunak will also “spend time with our people around the world, contributing to our culture of ongoing learning and development.”

Sunak’s salary from this new role will be entirely donated to The Richmond Project, a charity he co-founded with his wife, Akshata Murty, earlier this year to enhance numeracy skills across the UK.

The Advisory Committee on Business Appointments (Acoba), which reviews jobs taken by former ministers within two years of leaving office, signed off on Sunak’s appointment with specific conditions. Acoba noted that the role presented potential risks, including the perception that Goldman Sachs could benefit from unfair access to information due to Sunak’s time as prime minister. Consequently, the BBC said, Sunak is prohibited from advising other governments or their sovereign wealth funds for the bank, and he cannot advise clients with whom he had direct dealings during his premiership. He is also barred from lobbying the UK government on behalf of Goldman Sachs.

Since stepping down as prime minister last July, Sunak has taken on other unpaid roles, including joining the Blavatnik School of Government at the University of Oxford and the Hoover Institution at Stanford University, the BBC reported..

Sunak continues to serve as the Conservative MP for Richmond and Northallerton in Yorkshire.
