WASHINGTON, DC – Congressman Ro Khanna (D-CA) is spearheading a new legislative effort to repeal the TikTok divestiture law with the introduction of the Repeal the TikTok Ban Act. The bill, co-sponsored by Khanna and U.S. Senator Dr. Rand Paul (R-KY), aims to reverse the restrictions placed on the popular app, which Khanna argues have infringed on the free speech rights of millions of Americans.
“Over 1.2 million people signed our petition to stop the TikTok ban, and your voices were heard. Now we need to make sure TikTok remains open by passing this critical legislation,” Khanna said. “We need to show President Trump and Congress that this ban, if allowed to take effect, would devastate our freedom of expression and our economy.”
Khanna emphasized that the TikTok ban has harmed creators and small business owners who rely on the platform for economic opportunities. He pointed to reports from small business owners who saw a significant drop in sales when the app was temporarily unavailable.
By introducing this bill, Khanna seeks to ensure TikTok remains accessible for users and creators across the country. The proposed legislation calls for the repeal of the TikTok divestiture law and affirms that any existing designations of the app will have no legal effect.
His efforts have garnered support from various civil liberties organizations, including the ACLU, which has been vocal in advocating for the protection of digital rights.
