Sabyasachi Celebrates 25 Years, Deepika Padukone Steals the Spotlight
MUMBAI – Bollywood superstar Deepika Padukone opened designer Sabyasachi Mukherjee’s grand 25th-anniversary fashion show in Mumbai, setting the tone for an evening of nostalgia, glamour, and artistry. The show celebrated Mukherjee’s journey while paying homage to his roots in Kolkata, the city that inspires much of his work.
Deepika, a new mom, commanded attention in an effortlessly chic ensemble featuring white trousers, a shirt, and a trench coat, elevated by striking statement jewelry. Her elegant look embodied the designer’s ethos of blending tradition with modernity.
Adding to the star power, Bollywood icons Sonam Kapoor, Alia Bhatt, and Aditi Rao Hydari graced the red carpet, joining the celebration of Sabyasachi’s milestone.
The show closed with supermodel Christy Turlington walking the runway in a stunning black-and-white cashmere set paired with dazzling jewels.
The set design transported attendees to Mukherjee’s hometown of Kolkata, with its rich cultural tapestry reflected in every detail. Bengali hits by Asha Bhosle from the 1960s merged seamlessly with Leonard Cohen and Usha Uthup tracks, creating an eclectic musical backdrop that mirrored the designer’s aesthetic.
Each guest received a handwritten welcome note from Mukherjee, which he also posted on Instagram: “My grandmothers had a profound influence on me. Both exceptional women, they were the antithesis of each other. One taught me the power of minimalism, while the other showed me the dominance of maximalism.”
The collection featured over 150 looks crafted entirely in West Bengal, showcasing the labor of thousands of artisans. Every piece reflected the spirit of Sabyasachi’s signature style, including his iconic tinted glasses.
Mukherjee’s celebration was a testament to his journey as a designer who has not only redefined Indian fashion, particularly bridal fashion but also elevated its global appeal. The show, was unlike any other in India, with its Western presentation. (with ANI)
