NEW YORK, NY – Fashion designer Sabyasachi Mukherjee hosted a Diwali celebration at The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, bringing together actor Rani Mukerji, designer Masaba Gupta, actor Kal Penn and other guests.
Sabyasachi shared photographs and a video of the gathering on Instagram, offering glimpses of the guests, elaborate food displays and decor inside the museum’s galleries.

The guests brought a mix of traditional Indian attire and contemporary fashion to the occasion. Rani Mukerji, a longtime friend and muse of Sabyasachi, wore a metallic grey saree with a matching sleeveless blouse. Masaba Gupta chose an ivory strapless corset top paired with a matching skirt-saree inspired by the traditional Bengali white saree with a red border.
Kal Penn wore a brocade jacket, while Sabyasachi opted for a black bandhgala paired with white churidar. Other guests wore sequined black sarees, sherwanis and tuxedos.

A lifelike, taxidermy-style peacock stood amid the greenery, reflecting a recurring motif in Sabyasachi’s design.
Silver three-tiered stands displayed traditional Indian mithai, chocolate truffles, cookies and biscuits. Staff members dressed in white jackets and orange and red turbans served drinks in vintage glassware as live music played during the celebration.

The museum’s galleries, with their tall columns, stained-glass elements and marble statues, provided the setting for the Diwali gathering, bringing Indian festive traditions and fashion into one of New York’s prominent cultural institutions.
