WASHINGTON, DC – Rep. Shri Thanedar (D-MI) is drawing attention as he weighs whether to escalate his long-running clash with the Trump administration by filing articles of impeachment against Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth. He told Axios he is examining the move after reports emerged that Hegseth authorized a second lethal strike on an alleged drug-running vessel. This strike killed survivors of an initial assault.

Thanedar, who has already introduced multiple impeachment articles against President Donald Trump this year, said he views Hegseth as a danger to national security. In a post on X, he called the secretary of defense utterly incompetent, totally reckless, and a serious threat, adding that he must be impeached.

The controversy around Hegseth has intensified after a Washington Post report alleged that he personally directed U.S. forces to kill all individuals aboard a suspected narcotics vessel during a September operation. According to the report, the first strike left survivors in the water, prompting Hegseth to instruct the military to carry out a second attack to eliminate them.

The episode has triggered turmoil within the Department of Defense. Several outlets have reported deep anger among uniformed officers who believe Hegseth is attempting to shift accountability onto the armed forces.

Critics inside the Pentagon say the secretary has tried to distance himself from the decisions even as scrutiny mounts over whether the orders violated U.S. rules of engagement and amounted to a war crime.

Opponents have often rated Hegseth the most unqualified Secretary of Defense in modern times.
