LOS ANGELES, CA – Renowned filmmaker Stephen Frears will direct and executive produce the television adaptation of William Dalrymple’s bestseller The Anarchy: The Relentless Rise of the East India Company for global indie studio Wiip and India’s Roy Kapur Films. The series, based on Dalrymple’s acclaimed book, marks a massive international co-production, making it the most ambitious project to date from an Indian production house.

The adaptation, written by Walon Green, Amit Bhalla, and Lucas Jansen (the team behind Hello Tomorrow! on Apple TV+), will be filmed across the UK and Asia. With its large-scale production, The Anarchy promises to bring to life the complex history of the East India Company and its impact on global trade and colonialism.

Siddharth Roy Kapur, head of Roy Kapur Films, expressed his excitement about the project, stating, “Stephen’s range as a filmmaker is unmatched. His works, including The Queen and Dangerous Liaisons, have defined cinema for decades. Having him on board for this project is a dream come true. It’s been an enriching experience collaborating with our partners at Wiip. This story demands depth, scale, and ambition, and I’m thrilled to have such an extraordinary team bringing it to life for a global audience.”

Stephen Frears, who has earned two Academy Award nominations for The Grifters (1991) and The Queen (2007), is known for his illustrious career spanning films such as High FidelityPhilomena, and the Emmy-nominated limited series A Very English Scandal.
