WASHINGTON, DC – Congressman Shri Thanedar’s main opponent in the Democratic primary for his reelection has taken a turn with Adam Hollier being disqualified for not submitting the necessary number of valid voter signatures.

Thanedar had formally challenged the validity of Hollier’s petitions, asserting that his fellow Democrat should be removed from the ballot.

Wayne County Clerk Cathy Garret’s staff report said that Hollier had submitted signatures of 1,553 voters. Of these, only 863 were found to be valid against the mandatory signature of 1,000 voters. Thanedar in his challenge had drawn attention to 575 signatures. The report said many of the signatures had clear indications that they were not genuine.

Hollier can still appeal the verdict. In his statement, he alluded to the idea that he had trusted the process as a candidate and become a victim of fraud.

Thanedar said, “I personally collected hundreds of signatures and enjoyed talking to my constituents directly and listening to their concerns.”

Local media are now speculating what the Black Caucus, which had endorsed Hollier will now do. There have been reports of racial anger, as Michigan’s 13th District is predominantly Black and Thanedar is the first non-black representative in the area.

  • Shri Thanedar is a very decent congressman who has served his district and the country well. Additionally he is Chair of the Hindu/ Buddhist/Sikh/Jain Caucus.
    He deserves to be reelected.
